NICET Highway Construction Inspector Level III Practice Exam

The recommended width of driveways between combustible storage to ensure safety is typically identified as 15 feet. This width allows adequate space for emergency vehicles to maneuver and operate in the vicinity of storage areas, particularly considering the need for safe access in the event of a fire or other emergencies.

A space of 15 feet helps in preventing potential hazards that could arise from obstructed paths, ensuring that firefighters and emergency responders can reach the site quickly and effectively. It also reduces the likelihood of encroachment of combustible materials into the travel path, which could exacerbate fire risks.

Selecting a narrower width, such as 5 feet or 10 feet, may not provide sufficient room for safe passage and emergency maneuverability, while a width of 20 feet, although safer, may not be necessary or economically justified in all scenarios. Thus, a balance of safety and practicality leads to the determination that 15 feet is the most appropriate width for these situations.
